MARION, Ill. - The William Jewell baseball team put up the battle of their season on Saturday afternoon but fell 11-9 in 14 innings to third seed Maryville in an elimination at Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Cardinals rallied in the bottom of the ninth to force extras and nearly pulled off another rally but came up just short in a contest that lasted nearly five hours. Jewell finishes the season 30-23 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maryville took the early lead with a three run home run in the top of the first and added another on a solo shot in the fourth to lead 4-0.
- The Cardinals cut the deficit in half in the eighth as Jake Wilcox tripled to lead off the frame and scored on an RBI single from Dawson Tweet. Three batters later, Cole Conner put a pinch hit sac fly into the center to make it 4-2.
- In the top of the ninth, the Saints scored two runs to expand their lead back to four before lightning put things into a delay. After a 30 minutes, the teams returned to the field where Jewell put together a rally. Ben Click came up with a pinch hit single, the first of four consecutive base hits to score a run and force a pitching change. Alex Epp walked to score Jonah Sanford while Drew Reed made it a one run game with a sac fly to center. Just as he did earlier in the tournament, Tweet took advantage of a wild pitch to slide home and tie the game at six and force extra innings.
- Both teams stranded runners on base over the next four innings but came back to life in the 14th. Maryville took advantage of an error and four free passes from the Jewell pitching staff to plate five runs and go on top 11-6.
- Despite being down five, the Cardinals went down battling as Jordan Phillips tripled to score Reed who had led off with a single, before Kaden Owens doubled home another run. With one on, Sanford had an infield single to pull Jewell within 11-9 but the rally stopped there, coming up just short.
