Box Score LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team faced off with GLVC leader Lewis University on Thursday evening, coming up just short of handing the Flyers their first conference loss, falling 72-67 to drop to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in GLVC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals got off to a hot start, holding Lewis without a field goal for nearly eight minutes and grabbing an early 10-point lead. Back-to-back threes from Kate Hillyer and Emree Zars combined with a traditional three-point play by Caitlin Behling made it 15-5 near the end of the first period.
- The Flyers started the second quarter on a 16-0 run go from down six to up seven, 22-15. Ayden Shannon scored nine of the next 11 points for the Cardinals who retook the lead and held a 27-24 advantage at the break.
- After Lewis cut the lead to just one a three from Katie Knock started a Cardinal rally as they pushed their advantage back to eight. The Flyers again cut into the deficit but three consecutive triples, including two from Hillyer, put the Cards back on top heading into the final frame.
- A layup from Hillyer with just under seven minutes to play gave the Jewell a seven point advantage, 58-51. From there, Lewis rallied with a 17-5 run to go on top by five with less than a minute remaining. The Cardinals did not go quietly, scoring four points over the final 37 seconds but the Flyers made good on their free throws to escape with the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell shot 44% from the floor and 42% from long range.
- Shannon led the Cardinals with 25 points on 8-of-15 from the floor and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
- Zars added 15 points while Hillyer scored a season high 13 off the bench.
- Knock chipped in eight points, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
