Fourth Quarter Rally Comes Up Short at Missouri S&T

ROLLA, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team put together a fourth quarter rally on Saturday but came up short, falling to Missouri S&T 79-67 on the road to drop to 4-13 overall and 2-9 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The offense started slowly for the Cardinals who fell into an early 11-4 hole. Ayden Shannon got back-to-back layups to kick start a 17-9 run to give Jewell their first lead at 21-20 after a three from Chloe Frank
  • The Miners started the second quarter with 10 straight points before Frank stopped the drought with a triple. Missouri S&T maintained their lead for the duration of the second period as Caitlin Behling's three made it a 40-32 game at the break.
  • Out of the intermission, the Miners expanded their lead to as many as 17 in the third period, outscoring the Cardinals 21-14.
  • In the final frame, the Cardinals put together a rally as Shannon scored the first seven points of the quarter to get Jewell back within single digits at 61-53. Again, Missouri S&T pushed things back to 13 but layups from Frank and Shannon followed by a jumper from Kate Hillyer made it 70-65 with under two minutes to go. Jewell was forced to foul late as the Miners converted on 9-of-10 to bring the score to the final.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell shot 37.5% from the floor, compared to a blistering 54.5% from the Miners.
  • Shannon led all scorers with 24 points while Emree Zars had 11 and Frank 10. Both the latter two players had a team high seven rebounds.
  • The Cardinals forced 14 turnovers that led to 14 points
