LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team put together a second half rally that saw them take a late lead but Truman State came out on top, 61-58 on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals drop to 5-14 overall and 3-10 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals hit three early triples to open the game with a 9-4 lead but Truman State responded and outscored Jewell 15-9 over the remainder of the first quarter to lead 19-17 after 10 minutes.
- The teams traded points through much of the second frame, with neither grabbing more than three point lead for the first five-plus minutes. Over the last 2:43, the Bulldogs went on a 6-2 run to hold a 32-28 advantage at the intermission.
- Truman State opened the second half on a 10-2 run to open up their largest lead of the day at 44-32. A three by Chloe Frank sparked a 20-4 Jewell run that carried into the fourth quarter, giving the Cards a 52-48 lead with under seven minutes to go.
- Both squads went cold, combining for just eight points over a span of more than four minutes. With the game tied at 54, the Bulldogs converted two free throws and a bucket to take a four point lead. Ayden Shannon scored with 25 seconds on the clock but Truman was able to hold off the Cardinals, 61-58.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Shannon led the Cardinals with 14 points while Kate Hillyer added 13 and Emree Zars, 12.
- Jewell shot 34% from the floor but were just 6-of-27 from three point land.
