LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team held the lead for nearly 85% of the game on Saturday afternoon against Illinois Springfield, however, the Prairie Stars were able to grab the lead in the final minute to win 84-80. The Cardinals drop to 4-9 with the loss and 2-5 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tied at four early, Katie Knock started a Cardinal run with a three that ended in another triple, this time from Chloe Frank as Jewell led 19-14 after one frame.
- Seven straight points from Bree Shannon midway through the second quarter sparked an 18-5 run, capped by a three from Caitlin Behling that gave Jewell their largest lead of the day at 13. UIS finished the half on a 17-4 run of their own to pull within two at the break, 41-39.
- The Cardinals opened the second half, outscoring the Stars 10-3 to open back up a nine point advantage. UIS again cut the lead down to down entering the final quarter.
- Jewell maintained an advantage for much of the fourth period until a layup with 45 seconds on the clock tied the game at 77. A free throw from Shannon gave the Cards the lead back but UIS got another score to retake the lead for good, connecting on 5-of-6 free throws over the final 25 seconds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Emree Zars led three players in double-figures with 20 while Ayden Shannon added 19 to go with six assists. Bree Shannon finished with 15 points.
- The Cardinals shot 50% from the floor as a team and were 27-of-39 from the free throw line in a game that saw both teams with three players who fouled out.
