CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell enters the week looking to snap a three-game skid and win back-to-back homecoming games. The Cardinals will also be searching for win No. 4 for the first time since 2015 and their first two-win conference season since 2017.
  • Jewell will welcome back to Norris Patterson Field two familiar faces on the opposite sideline this weekend. Missouri S&T Defensive Coordinator Corey Sudhoff spent two seasons from 2017-2018 as the defensive line coach for the Cardinals. Additionally former Jewell defensive lineman Kevin Kim, '21 will be back on The Hill for Homecoming, but this time as the linebackers coach for the Miners.
  • After not playing an overtime game in the NCAA era, the Cardinals have now played two in the last two weeks. Jewell rallied from down 17-0 in the first half to take a fourth quarter lead at Upper Iowa last weekend but the Peacocks tied things up with just under two minutes to play and eventually won in overtime, 38-31.
  • The Cardinals enter the week as one of the top-10 teams in Division II in recovered fumbles, coming in at No. 8 with six total. Jewell is third in the league in turnovers gained, taking the football away 11 times, while committing 13 themselves.
  • Jewell has forced their opponents into 12 fumbles, most recently by Jamar Cross, Jr. last weekend. Adam Callahan enters the week ranked third nationally in with three on the season. The senior is also top-11 in Division II and leads the GLVC with 10.2 tackles per game, after a 12 take down performance at Upper Iowa.
  • The Cardinals continue to lead the league in team sacks at 2.33 per game, but will be looking for their first since September 28 against Davenport, when they had three. Javion Macias is 11th in Division II and first in the GLVC with Justin Endicott following close behind at second in the league with 0.90 and 0.67 sacks per contest, respectively.
  • Keaundre McCullough returned to action last week after missing week five due to injury. The redshirt senior is tops in the GLVC in all-purpose yards at 158.80 per game which is sixth nationally. He continues to pace the conference rushing yards (756), rushing yards per carry (7.1), rushing touchdowns (9), and rushing yards per game (151.2).
  • Edmarrion Contreras has broken out in recent games as a top target for the Cardinals and quarterback Tucker Griffin. The redshirt freshman has 17 catches on the season for 192 yards with 13 and 130 of those coming in the last three games. Last week at Upper Iowa, he grabbed a career high six receptions for 79 yards while also totaling 49 kick return yards on two attempts.
  •  AJ Austene is also in the midst of a breakout season, coming into the week ranked 11th in the GLVC with 256 yards on an average of 42.7 per game. His five receiving touchdowns is also fifth in the league as the junior has already tied his receptions total from last season and tripled his touchdown catches.
  • The Jewell defense was tested last weekend, giving up a season high 38 points but they continue to be solid in late-down situations. The Cardinals are tops in the GLVC  in third down conversion defense, allowing conversions just over 30% of the time. Additionally, they are second in the league and 23rd nationally in fourth down defense at 31.3%.
