Cardinals Capitalize in Fourth Quarter to Earn 28-27 Win at Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The William Jewell football team cashed in on late miscues by Southwest Baptist to grab a 28-27 victory on the road on Saturday and secure their first four-win season since 2015. Jewell evens their record at 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cardinals struck first, as Adam Callahan recovered a fumble by the SBU quarterback that was converted to six points five plays later. Jake Shaffer found Layne Cavanah in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown connection.
  • Early in the second quarter, Jewell used nine plays to go 71 yards that ended with MicahJo Barnett running it in from three yards to put the Cards in front 14-0.
  • Southwest Baptist's offense got rolling midway through the second period, scoring 10 straight points to pull within four.
  • With just under two minutes remaining in the half, Sean Mitchell intercepted a Bearcat pass, returning it 40 yards for the score but SBU came right back two plays later for their own touchdown to make it 21-17 at the half.
  • The Bearcats took their first lead in the final moments of the third quarter on a 22-yard touchdown completion to Jaquan Dorsey.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Bearcat quarterback threw a pass directly to the hands of Max McKenzie who returned it 11 yards to set up the Cardinal offense. Jewell capitalized on the miscue as well as an untimely penalty by the Bearcats to march down field and cash in on Keaundre McCullough's one yard touchdown run to go back in front, 28-27.
  • SBU got the ball back with under two minutes to go and traveled down field to set up a 25-yard field goal attempt for the win. Derrick Von Hubbard got his hands on the kick to knock it down and give Jewell the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Jewell finished with 215 rushing yards, led by McCullough's 140 to push him past the 1,000 mark for the season, for the just the ninth time in program history. The redshirt senior's 33 attempts are most by a Cardinal since Thomas Cook, Jr.'s 30 against Quincy in October 2013.
  • AJ Austene caught six passes for 62 yards while Layne Cavanah had three catches for 28 yards and a touchdown.
  • Shaffer was 13-for-24 for 115 yards with one score through the air.
  • Javion Macias led the defense with eight tackles while Parker Cummins had one sack.
  • Mitchell's pick six was the first for the Cardinals since Kwesi Hooks against Colorado Mesa on September 1, 2022.
