Jewell Heads to Quincy for Fourth Annual Battle of the Birds

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team will travel east this weekend to Quincy University to take on the Hawks in the fourth annual Battle of the Birds. Kick off is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell snapped a four game losing streak last weekend with a big 28-27 win on the road at Southwest Baptist. The Cardinals will be in search of win No. 5 for the first time since 2014 and their third conference win for the first time since 2015 when they went 4-4.
  • After not winning a road game since November 12, 2022, Jewell is sitting at 4-1 on the away from Norris Patterson Field, this fall. A Cardinal win will mark their first season with five road wins since prior to 1991.
  • Saturday's game is the fourth annual Battle of the Birds, with the winner taking over the Bird Cage Trophy. Quincy took home the first edition of the rivalry series in 2021 and again in 2023. The Cardinals brought the trophy back to Liberty in 2022 with a 17-7 road win.
  • With his 140 rushing yards last week, Keaundre McCullough surpassed the 1,000 mark for the season. This is the ninth occurrence in program, as he joined Deeikee Williams (1998 & 1999), David Cunningham (1978 & 1980), Clem Buschmann (1962), Eric Levings (1997), Steve Hodges (1982), and Mike Ricketts (1985) among the 1,000 yard rushers.
  • The top two rushers in the Great Lakes Valley Conference will go head-to-head this weekend as McCullough will face off with Quincy's Teon Dollard. The duo is are the only two players in the league to average more than 100 yards per game, as the former puts up 148.9 on average, fourth best in Division II, while Dollard sits at 102.2 per contest.
  • Derrick Von Hubbard earned GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week honors this week, the first for Jewell since 2017. The junior defensive lineman blocked a 25-yard field goal kick with two seconds remaining in regulation to give the Cardinals a 28-27 win at Southwest Baptist.
  • The Cardinal defense has proven one of the best turnarounds in the GLVC. Last season, Jewell allowed opponents more than 40 points per game on average but enter week 10, allowing just 26.25. The Cardinals have given up 30-plus points just twice this fall after doing so eight times last season. A strong upperclassmen core of players such as Adam Callahan, Sean Mitchell, Justin Endicott, Javion Macias, Preston Snead, Keagan Hart, and Derrick Von Hubbard has combined with talented rookies like Caleb Donnell, Max McKenzie, and Jayshawn Richmond to form a potent attack under coordinator Kevin Corless
  • Jake Shaffer will start his second career game this weekend after going 13-for-24 for 115 yards and one passing touchdown with two interceptions. The true freshman also ran for 44 yards one eight carries at Southwest Baptist.
  • Adam Callahan continues to outpace the rest of the GLVC defensively as the senior comes into week 10 averaging 10.1 tackles per game, nearly two more than the next player. His 81 total and 60 solos are 14 and 16 more than Indianapolis' Clay Schulte who is second in the league.
  • Jewell boasts three of the top 10 players in the GLVC in tackles-for-loss as Macias sits sixth (1.07), followed by Callahan in seventh (1.00) and Endicott ninth (0.94). Macias also leads the conference with 0.64 sacks per game while Endicott is fifth at 0.50. In the secondary, Max McKenzie has turned into one of the top young defensive backs in the league, ranked third with 1.13 passes defended per game, to go with two interceptions.
