Cold Second Quarter Dooms Cardinals Against Washburn

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team was outscored 24-8 in the second quarter on Tuesday, which ultimately proved the difference in a 80-58 loss to Washburn University. The Cardinals move to 1-2 on the young season with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Washburn jumped out to an early 17-9 lead but back-to-back three pointers from Kate Hillyer and Kirsten Hauck, their second each of the opening quarter, pulled the Cardinals back within two after the first 10 minutes.
  • In the second period, the Ichabods scored 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting while holding Jewell to just 15% from the floor to build a 41-23 lead at the break.
  • After Washburn doubled up the Cardinals, 50-25 in the early part of the third quarter, Jewell put together a rally at the end, going on 10-3 run to cut the deficit to 13 with 6:10 to play. The Ichabods outscored the Cardinals 17-8 the rest of the way to bring the score to the final.
