BOLIVAR, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team suffered a 74-59 loss on Saturday at Southwest Baptist to fall to 4-5 on the season and 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Leading 8-4 in the opening moments, the Cardinals were outscored 31-7 over the next 13 minutes as SBU shot better than 60% while holding Jewell to less than 28% from the floor. The Cards got two buckets from Jordan Jermain to close the half down 38-20. 
• The Bearcats led by as many as 23 midway through the second half before Jewell went on a 10-2 run, capped by five straight points from Jason Thirdkill, Jr. to cut the deficit to 15 but SBU countered with quick 8-0 run of their own to push it back to 66-43. The Cardinal bench made a final push late in the game with layups from Caden McGuire and Nick Burri to get back within 15 but could get no closer.   

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Thirdkill, Jr. led the Cardinals with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds while Jordan Jermain added 16. 
• Kanukayi Gudza and Ashton Jermain each had eight points with the former handing out a team high three assists. 
• Jewell shot 50% in the second half to outscore SBU 39-36 but was just 9-of-31 from the floor in the first period.

Jewell will close out the non-conference portion of the schedule before the winter break, beginning with a date with Fort Hays next Saturday (Dec. 14) in the Mabee Center.
