BOLIVAR, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team dropped a tough one on Saturday afternoon at Southwest Baptist, 81-80. The Cardinals fall to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tied at 11 early, the Cardinals got five points from Caitlin Behling to go in front after the first period.
- With Jewell leading by six after a Kate Hillyer three-point play, the Bearcats went on a 11-5 run to tie the score at the 32, but Morgan Ives hit a layup to close the period and give the Cards a two point advantage, 39-37.
- Jewell came out of the intermission and quickly expanded their lead to seven, after a bucket by Ayden Shannon. Southwest Baptist followed with a 17-11 run before Kirsten Hauck ended the skid with a triple to put Jewell back in front.
- In the fourth quarter, the teams combined for 22 fouls that led to 23 points from free throws as no team led by more than five late. With the Bearcats on top, a three from Karlee Holland got Jewell back within one before Ella Bockenstedt put Jewell in front 78-77 with two free shots. The teams exchanged trips to the line over the final 69 seconds as SBU hit two with four seconds to go to escape with the win.

- Hillyer finished with a team high 17 points with Ayden Shannon adding 13, Bree Shannon 12, and Hauck 10.
- Holland led the team with five rebounds while Ayden Shannon had six assists.
- Jewell forced 21 turnovers that led to 25 points.
- The Jewell bench outscored their counterparts, 26-22, led by Bockenstedt's nine.
- The game included 52 combined fouls and 62 free total throw attempts as the Cardinals were 25-of-32 from the stripe.
