Rockhurst Rallies in Fourth Quarter to Down Cardinals

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team held an eight point lead in the second half but crosstown rival Rockhurst rallied with a 28-point fourth quarter to win 89-81. The Cardinals drop to 5-19 on the season and 3-15 in conference action. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied at 11 late in the first quarter, Rockhurst went on a 11-3 run to open up a 22-14 lead. Ayden Shannon scored seven straight followed by a three from Bree Shannon to cap a 12-3 Cardinal run to put them back in front, 26-24.
  • The Hawks went back on top by five late in the first half but four points from Ayden Shannon was followed by a triple from Caitlin Behling to knot things up at 40 at the intermission. 
  • After Rockhurst came out of the break and took a six point lead, the Cardinals rallied behind a combined 13 points from Ayden Shannon and Kate Hillyer go from down six to up seven with under five minutes to go in the quarter. A free throw from Chloe Frank gave Jewel their largest lead of the day at 65-57 to close the third period. 
  • Rockhurst outscored the Cardinals 28-15 in the final 10 minutes to take the eight point win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ayden Shannon led the Cardinals with a career high 30 points, the most by a Cardinal since Kiara Bradley's 30 in December 2020. 
  • Hillyer added 17 points while Behling had 16 points and six rebounds off the bench. 
  • Emree Zars picked up a team high nine rebounds, including five on on the offensive end. 
  • Jewell shot 46% from the floor and were 22-of-29 from the free throw line.

Jewell hits the road for the final time next week as they head to Indianapolis on Thursday.
