Softball Posts Run Rule Victory to Split with Southwest Minnesota State

SIOUX CENTER, IOWA - After dropping the opening game of the day 7-1 to Southwest Minnesota State, the William Jewell softball team rallied for a 10-2 win in six innings in game two to earn the split and move to 4-4 on the season. 

GAME ONE: Southwest Minnesota State 7, Jewell 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A two RBI single in the bottom of the first gave the Mustangs a quick 2-0 lead. They added three runs on three hits and a Cardinal miscue in the third to expand their lead to 5-0. 
  • A triple in the fourth added two more for Southwest Minnesota State. 
  • The Cardinals got on the board as Tori Woodard grabbed a pinch hit RBI single, scoring Amanda Chung

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell had six hits as a team, led by two each from Chung and Sophia Lopez
  • Avrey Reynolds (2-2) suffered the loss in the circle, working three frames allowing three earned runs on five hits. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 10, Southwest Minnesota State 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Woodard put Jewell on the board first in game two with a sac fly in the bottom of the first. 
  • The Cardinals put up a crooked number in the third as Lopez, Woodard and Addie Bell roped three straight doubles followed by a base hit from Lexi Lopez to make it 4-1. 
  • A solo home run got Southwest Minnesota State on the board but Jewell came back with two more runs on an RBI single from Alexa Almejo and a bases loaded walk to Kenzie Stahl
  • Leading by four heading into the sixth, Almejo added two more RBI with a single to right center while Lexi Lopez and Vandiver each drew bases loaded walks to finish off the run rule win, 10-2. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals out hit the Mustangs 9-3, led by three from Almejo who also had a team high three RBI. 
  • Sophia Lopez scored three times while Bell and Sabrina Olmo crossed the plate twice. 
  • Olivia Wood (2-0) threw six strong innings to earn the win, allowing only two earned runs on three hits while striking out five. 

UP NEXT
Jewell returns to action tomorrow as they take on St. Cloud State University for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
