Jewell Downs Wayne State to Split First Day of Lewis Dome Invite

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The William Jewell softball team downed Wayne State (Mich.) 2-0 to open the Lewis Dome Invitational on Saturday before falling 6-0 to Grand Valley State. The Cardinals move to 5-7 with the split. 

GAME ONE (Jewell 2, Wayne State University 0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After five scoreless innings, the Cardinals finally broke through in the sixth as Sabrina Olmo doubled and scored on a ground ball from Tori Woodard
  • In the seventh, Jewell added an insurance run on an Alexa Almejo double to score Addie Bell. The Warriors put a runner in scoring position in the bottom half but a ground out ended the game. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals finished with six hits, led by two from Ella Hoffman.
  • Avrey Reynolds (3-3) earned her third win of the season with a complete game shutout.  

GAME TWO (Grand Valley State 6, Jewell 0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grand Valley scored two early runs to take the lead. The Cardinals threatened in the third frame with two on base but a strikeout ended the rally. 
  • The Lakers added three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to take the 6-0 game. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Bell paced the offense with two hits including a double. 
  • Olivia Wood (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits. 

UP NEXT
Jewell will wrap up the Dome Invite on Sunday, taking on Bemidji State and Parkside.
