Cardinals Rally to Defeat Parkside, 4-3

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The William Jewell softball team rallied for a 4-3 win over Parkside (Wis.) on Sunday to split the final day of the Lewis Dome Invitational. The Cardinals fell to Bemidji State in the early morning and move to 6-8 on the season. 

GAME ONE: Bemidji State 11, Jewell 6
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell took the early lead in the opening game of the day as Amanda Chung blasted her first home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the second inning. An Alexa Almejo double in the third scored Ella Hoffman to give the Cards a 3-0 advantage.  
  • The Beavers scored two runs in the top of the fourth before exploding for seven more in the following frame to break open a 9-3 lead.
  • The Cardinals got one back in the bottom half of the fifth as Tori Woodard scored on a ground out but Bemidji State scored two more in the sixth to expand their lead back to eight. 
  • Jewell made a run in the final frame with RBI singles from Almejo and Chung but could get no closer.   

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell posted a season high 11 hits with Chung, Almejo, Hoffman and Sabrina Olmo each having two. 
  • Hoffman and Woodard finished with two runs while Chung drove in three. 
  • Avrey Reynolds (3-4) took the loss, working 4.1 innings.  

GAME TWO: Jewell 4, Parkside 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rangers got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first before adding another in the third. 
  • Jewell tied things up in the bottom half as Chung doubled down the left field line to score Kenzie Stahl followed by an RBI fielder's choice and sac fly to plate two more. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth Jewell scored the go ahead run as Olmo tripled and crossed the plate on a ground out. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Olmo finished with a team high three hits and two runs while Chung drove in two. 
  • Olivia Wood (3-2) earned the win in relief, working 3.2 scoreless frames. 
  • Reynolds (1) picked up her first save with a shutout seventh. 

UP NEXT
Jewell returns to the confines of Cardinal Field for the first time this season on March 2-3 as they host Wayne State (Neb.) and Northwest Missouri State for a two-day triangular.
