Softball Drops Pair on Opening Day

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - The William Jewell softball team opened the season on Friday afternoon at the Alvy Early Classic where they dropped a pair of close games, falling 5-4 to Southeastern Oklahoma State before dropping a 3-1 decision to Newman University. 

GAME 1: Southeastern Okla. 5, Jewell 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals got off to a strong start, putting two in scoring position with no one out but could not score them. Southeastern got on the board in the bottom half to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Storm added two more in the second before Jewell got on the board in the third on a Sophia Lopez two-run home run. 
  • The Cardinals tied the game in the top half of the fourth as Mya Zavala walked before Sheyenne Kelch came on to run and scored on a ground out. 
  • Southeastern scored two in the sixth frame on a home run and RBI single to retake the lead. 
  • In the top of the seventh, Amanda Chung walked and came around to score on a single from Lopez but a fly ended the rally. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lopez and Sabrina Olmo finished with two hits as part of Jewell's eight total. 
  • Chung scored twice while Lopez finished with three RBI. 
  • Avrey Reynolds (0-1) suffered the loss, working the final four innings, allowing two earned runs with two strikeouts. 

GAME 2: Newman 3, Jewell 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Newman scored three in the opening frame to take the early lead in the second game of the day. 
  • Jewell got on the board in the fourth as Olmo singled and advanced on an error before scoring on a Lopez sac fly. 
  • Both teams combined for just two hits over the final three innings to end the game at 3-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The offense was limited to just four hits, one each from Olmo, Chung, Zavla, and Sydney Cure
  • Sydney Parra (0-1) took the loss, tossing all seven innings allowing just two earned runs on five hits. 

UP NEXT
Jewell continues action at the Alvy Early Classic on Saturday, taking on East Central (Okla.) and Emporia State.
