LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-6 decision to Missouri Baptist, ranked seventh in the NAIA, during the 2024 home opener on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals move to 1-1 on the young season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Missouri Baptist got on the board first, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Addison Devers closed the first quarter with a goal to make it 3-1.
- Just inside the start of the second frame, the Spartans scored but the Cardinals turned a turnover into a Jacey Wynn goal on the other end to cut the deficit in half. MBU scored twice more while Jewell got a free position score by Olivia Fornelli to head to the break trailing 6-3.
- Kaylee Gross cut the score to 6-4 on a goal with under 12 to go in the third period but the Spartans pushed their lead to four over the following six minutes. Wynn and Fornelli scored again to close the quarter and head to the finale down three, 9-6.
- Missouri Baptist outscored the Cards 6-0 in the fourth frame to extend their lead to the final of 15-6.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Fornelli finished with a team high three points with two goals and one assist while Wynn also added two goals.
- Haydin Gibson recorded eight saves.
- Missouri Baptist out shot the Cardinals 29-19 while both teams finished with 21 ground balls and 25 turnovers.
