LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team earned their second sweep of Lincoln University of Missouri of the season on Tuesday, taking game one 7-3 before downing the Blue Tigers 7-6 in eight innings in the nightcap. The Cardinals, who have now won 11 straight, improve to 16-8 overall.
GAME ONE: Jewell 7, Lincoln 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lincoln strung together three hits in the top of the third to take an early lead but the Cardinals came right back in the bottom half with two scores. After Lexi Lopez led off with a single to right center Addie Bell tripled to drive in the first run before scoring on a base hit from Alexa Almejo.
- Jewell broke things open in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on five hits, including an Amanda Chung home run, and taking advantage of two errors.
- The Blue Tigers got two runs in the top of the seventh but a ground out ended the rally.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell out hit the Blue Tigers 12-7, led by two a piece from Bell, Almejo, Sabrina Olmo and Tori Woodard.
- Bell also added two runs and two RBI.
- Avrey Reynolds (8-4) earned the win working six innings, allowing just a single earned run.
GAME TWO: Jewell 7, Lincoln 6 (8 Innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A lead off home run gave Lincoln a quick lead in game two before they added two more in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
- Addie Bell blasted a solo shot to left center in to pull the Cardinals within one.
- In the top of the seventh, the Blue Tigers added a run but Jewell got an RBI double from Kenzie Stahl and a sac fly to knot things at four in the bottom half and force extras.
- With the international tie breaker rules in effect, Lincoln plated two runs on a single from L Brandt.
- With a runner on second in the bottom half, Tori Woodard sent a line drive past the diving center fielder to race home for an inside-the-park home run and tie the game at 6-6. With two outs, Stahl drew a walk, stole second and scored on a Lexi Lopez single to win in walk off fashion.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Bell again led the Cardinals with three hits while Woodard added two along with two RBI.
- Sydney Parra (3-1) earned the win in relief, tossing the final 5.1 innings.
UP NEXT
Jewell will open Great Lakes Valley Conference this weekend with two tough tests as they host Missouri-St. Louis and McKendree.
