FAYETTE, Iowa. – The William Jewell baseball defeated Upper Iowa University in extra innings Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 10-9. The win moves the Cardinals back into the win column at 7-6, 1-3 GLVC. It the first of two games against the first-year conference member; however, both being played as non-conference games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cardinals struck first in top of the first inning with a pair of RBI singles from Cole Conner and Jordan Phillips put Jewell up 2-0.
- After allowing five in the first, Jewell found home plate after a wild pitch scored Dawson Tweet.
- The following inning a sac fly from Phillips plated Alex Epp. Three batters later a two-RBI single scoring Tweet and Nick Chanez gave the Cardinals the one-run lead.
- Tied 6-6 going into the ninth, Epp slammed a solo shot to left field while Tweet and Will Brant each batted a run in to go to the bottom of the frame with a 9-6 lead, but the Peacocks would match with three runs of their own to force extra innings.
- Teams went into the 11th inning tied at nine. A lead-off single for Phillips put him on where he ultimately scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to give Jewell the 10-9 victory.
KEY STATS
- Junior Nick Fitzanko picked up the win, tossing three innings, striking out three, walking three, and surrendering zero hits.
- Collectively, the staff struck out nine, while Upper Iowa was only able to put up four K's.
- Jewell moves to 6-1 versus the Peacocks all-time, with the lone loss coming at home last season.
