Cardinals Fall to Top Seed UIndy in First Round of Midwest Region

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The William Jewell men's basketball team outscored Indianapolis in the second half but fell 71-65 in the opening round of the NCAA-II Tournament at the Midwest Regional. The Cardinals finish the best season of the NCAA era at 21-11 overall. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Five straight points from Jordan Jermain put the Cardinals in front 12-11 early but UIndy followed with an 11-2 run to go on top by eight. Kobe McKinley ended the skid as Jewell rallied to pull within three after a triple from Trey Shannon.
  • They Greyhounds ended the half on a 13-0 run to take a 42-26 lead into the break. 
  • Eli Wingert scored the first bucket of the second half as Jewell held the Greyhounds scoreless for nearly eight minutes, pulling within seven as a Shannon fast break layup. 
  • Over the final 10 minutes, the Cardinals cut the deficit down to single digits nine times, only to see the hosts expand it back to double digits each time. A layup by Kyle Scharbrough cut the deficit to just six with two seconds left but Jewell could get no closer. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jermain finished with a team high 20 points while Shannon added 15, McKinley 11 and Wingert 10. 
  • Isaac Patterson grabbed a team high nine rebounds with Shannon handing out four assists. 
  • The Cardinals shot 38% for the game while UIndy hit nearly 53%.
