LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team let
Kyle Fitzgerald go the distance Tuesday afternoon, on the way to a 10-3 victory over Upper Iowa University. The win marks the second Tuesday in a row that Jewell beat the Peacocks after a 10-9, 11 inning win last Tuesday in Fayette, Iowa. The win pushes the Cardinals to 11-7 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals began the scoring in the first when Jordan Phillips reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Evan Jilbert from third.
- In the second, Jewell plated a pair off a Jilbert double to left center field that put the Cards up 3-0.
- Jewell continued their score-by-inning in the third. With two men on, catcher Ben Click hit a deep fly ball to right field that kept carrying and eventually landed on the far side of the fence for his second homer of the year to make it 6-0.
- After the Peacocks pulled within four, Cale Blasi hit a sac fly to left to plate one.
- Four batters later with the bases loaded, Phillips doubled to deep right center clearing the bases to put Jewell up 10-2.
- Upper Iowa would score a lone run in the ninth, falling short of any comeback.
KEY STATS
- Fitzgerald struck out seven, tying his season high, in his fourth start. The redshirt junior moves to 2-1 on the season, notching the first nine-inning complete game of the season for Jewell.
- Click extended his hitting streak to six games, the longest active streak on the team.
- Phillips four RBIs led the team, while giving him seven multi-RBI games this season – the most on the team.
