LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball split their doubleheader with Bemidji State University on Saturday, taking the first game 7-2 and dropping the second contest by a final of 8-7. Jewell now holds a 4-3 record on the season. 
 

Game 1 (Jewell 7, Bemidji State 2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Down one in the second Cole Conner singled to second base scoring Jordan Phillips to get on the board to tie it up 1-1.
• After one Bemedji State run in the third inning, Dawson Tweet was walked with the bases loaded scoring Alex Epp. The next inning Epp notched an RBI single scoring Jonah Sanford to put the Cardinals up 3-2 at the end of the fourth. 
• A four-run top of the sixth provided all the insurance Jewell would need highlighted with a Will McCombs homerun to centerfield before two more Cardinal runs made it 7-2.

KEY STATS

• Breven Yarbro threw a complete game, the first of his Jewell career, going seven innings while striking out seven, allowing seven hits and a pair of runs.
• Jewell stole four bases in the win, one from Epp, Evan Jilbert, Phillips, and Sanford. 
• McCombs' two-run blast would be his first of the year, with a team high two RBIs.

 
Game 2 (Jewell 7, Bemidji State 8)
HOW IT HAPPENED
 

• Jewell responded to a single run first inning by plating a pair of their own in the bottom of the first, a Bemidji State error allowed for Jordan Phillips and Jake Wilcox to score making it 2-1.
• In the next inning, Ben Click scored on an RBI single to center field, followed by a two-run homer off the bat of Wilcox increasing the lead to four runs.
• The Beavers answered with a five-run top of the third to go up 6-5.
• Will McCombs homered to center field in the fourth, scoring Ben Click and giving Jewell back the one-run lead. 
• The Cardinals were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh after giving up a two-run double in the top of the inning and would go on to loose 8-7.

KEY STATS

• McCombs hit his second home run of the day, finishing with four RBIs. 
• Ryan Hunt received the loss, his first on the season after coming in to relief starting pitcher Jacob Sullivan after 2.2 IP. Together the staff combined for six strikeouts, six of which came from Hunt.
