Cardinals Shutout Illinois Springfield to Earn Senior Day Split

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team opened Senior Day with a 5-0 shutout of Illinois Springfield before the Prairie Stars rallied in game two for a 4-2 win. The Cardinal move to 20-24 with the split and 3-15 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

GAME ONE: Jewell 5, UIS 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell did all their damage in the opening frame as two base hits put two in scoring position for Amanda Chung who doubled and plated both runners for a quick lead. Abby Vandiver reached on a Star error which scored Chung and Tori Woodard, who had singled before the former came around to score herself on a wild pitch.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Woodard and Sabrina Olmo each had two hits while Chung drove in two.
  • Avrey Reynolds (10-11) picked up the win, her tenth of the season, in relief allowing just three hits over the final five frames.

GAME TWO: UIS 4, Jewell 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got on the board in the second inning in game two as Kenzie Stahl reached on an errant throw that allowed Woodard to cross the plate.
  • The Cardinals clung to a 1-0 lead for the next four innings until five hits and a Jewell miscue plated four for the visitors to put UIS in front 4-1.
  • Sydney Cure led off the bottom half of the seventh with a solo home run but the Cards could get no closer.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Cure's two hits led the offense while Vandiver and Addie Bell also drew one walk a piece.
  • Reynolds (10-12) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs over the final 2.1 frames.
