Newman Downs Cardinals with Seventh Inning Rallies

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday at the hands of Newman University. The Cardinals fall to 22-26 on the season with the losses.

GAME ONE: Newman 6, Jewell 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell put four runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of two Jet errors while also getting RBI singles from Addie Bell and Abby Vandiver
  • An infield single plated one run for Newman in the fourth before the Jets added two more in the sixth to pull within one.
  • In the top of the seventh, Newman got back-to-back base hits to go on top 6-4.
  • The Cardinals looked to start a big inning in the bottom half as Lexi Lopez led off with a double but base running blunders ended the rally.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Vandiver led the Cardinals with two hits while she, Bell, and Alexa Almejo each drove in a run.
  • Avrey Reynolds (11-13) suffered the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs.

GAME TWO: Newman 5, Jewell 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got on the board early in game two as a dropped third strike led to an error which allowed Sabrina Olmo to score but a solo home run by the Jets in the top of the second quickly knotted things up.
  • In the fourth frame, Kenzie Stahl roped a base hit to center to score Sydney Cure while a fielding error pushed Bell across in the fifth to make it 3-1.
  • Down to their final out, the Jets got four straight hits, including three doubles to score four runs and win 5-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Olmo and Stahl finished with two hits with the latter having a triple.
  • Sammie Welt (0-2) took the loss in the circle, working 6.2 frames.
