Softball Takes Game Two for Split at Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team took game two of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Southwest Baptist, winning 6-5 after falling in the opener 11-9. The Cardinals move to 23-27 overall and 6-16 in conference play. 

GAME ONE: SBU 11, Jewell 9
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell bats came out hot as the Cardinals plated four runs on five hits and an SBU error in the opening inning. 
  • The Bearcats got on the board in the bottom half and pulled within one with two more in the third. 
  • Alexa Almejo doubled in the fourth to score Sabrina Olmo but SBU came right back with two on a Jewell misplay to knot things up. A three-run blast gave the Bearcats an 8-5 lead. 
  • Abby Vandiver sent a solo home run to center in the top of the fifth but SBU got two more runs of their own to take an 11-6 lead. 
  • Down to their final chance, the Cardinals put two on base for Sophia Lopez who singled to plate one. Sydney Cure followed with a two-RBI double to pull the Cards within 11-9 but could get no closer.   

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell finished with 13 hits, led by Vandiver with three including a home run and a double. 
  • Vandiver and Amanda Chung each drove in two runs while Tori Woodard also scored twice. 
  • Avrey Reynolds (11-13) took the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 6, SBU 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got on the board first in game two behind a three-run home run from Chung to make it an early 4-0 Cardinal advantage. 
  • Leading 4-1, Jewell got an RBI double to left center from Olmo before Chung added another on a double in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-1. 
  • In the fifth, the Bearcats made things interesting with a bases clearing double to pull SBU within one but Olivia Wood shut the door late. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Chung led the offense with two hits, both for extra bases, and a game high four RBI.
  • Wod (9-7) earned the complete game win, striking out a season high eight. 

UP NEXT
Jewell continues the road trip on Sunday with a doubleheader at Drury.
