Cardinals Get Mid-Week Win Over Fort Hays State

LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team avenged a three-run loss last week to Fort Hays State University at home Tuesday afternoon, a 10-4 victory over the Tigers. With two series' remaining, Jewell is 25-17 and 15-13 in GLVC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell allowed one Tiger run in the first but answered in the bottom half of the frame with two of their own. A leadoff home run from Alex Epp quickly tied it up. Shortly after stealing third, Jake Wilcox was able to advance to home for the second Cardinal run of the inning when Jordan Phillips stole second.
  • The next inning, Wilcox notched an RBI double that scored catcher Matt Madison who walked to start the inning. Phillips would later single to make it a 4-3 game.
  • After Fort Hays tied it at four runs, Jewell would plate 2 runs to retake the lead.
  • A one, two, three inning from Ryan Foley who retired the side on swinging strikeouts would quickly get Jewell to the bottom half where they would score four runs, including two runs off of hits from Cameron Dayton and Jilbert.
  • Pitching from Nick Fitzanko, Jake Sullivan, and Brogan McDougal would allow only one hit over the next three innings as Jewell would capture the 10-4 win.

KEY STATS
  • Reliever Aidan Flood got his first win of the year, moving to 1-0 after coming in and striking out two batters and not giving up a hit.
  • Wilcox's went 3-for-3 with three doubles, two RBIs, and a walk. Three doubles ties the program's single-game doubles record in the NCAA era. The left fielder also swiped three bags for the Cardinals.
  • Jewell was a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts, it is second-most in a single game in the NCAA era, compared to the Tigers who were just 1-for-2 in steals.

UP NEXT
