Early Runs Not Enough as Cardinals Drop Two at Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa - The William Jewell softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday at Upper Iowa University, falling 9-3 and 2-1. The Cardinals move to 19-21 overall and 2-12 in conference play. 

GAME ONE: Upper Iowa 9, Jewell 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell came out of the gate fast, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. A Sabrina Olmo double was followed by two free passes to load the bases for Amanda Chung who drew another walk to plate the first run. Abby Vandiver then roped a single to center field to score Alexa Almejo before Addie Bell scored on a wild pitch. 
  • The Peacocks came right back in the bottom half, putting up four runs on five hits to take the lead, 4-3. 
  • Upper Iowa added a run in the second and four in the fifth to push their advantage to six. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell had 10 hits on the game, led by three from Vandiver while Olmo had two. 
  • Avrey Reynolds (9-10) took the loss, working 4.1 frames, allowing nine earned runs. 

GAME TWO: Upper Iowa 2, Jewell 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The home team got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth as an error plated the first run, followed by a sac fly to give the Peacocks a 2-0 lead. 
  • Sophia Lopez homered in the fifth to cut the deficit in half but the Cards could get no more. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lopez led the offense with three of the team's five hits while also scoring a run. 
  • Olivia Wood (7-6) suffered the loss, tossing six innings, giving up just two earned runs. 

UP NEXT
Jewell looks to rebound on Sunday as they head to Truman State for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
