MARION, Ill. – The William Jewell baseball team won their matinee game against #3 seeded Drury University Saturday morning 8-7 to keep their season alive. The Cardinals would force extra innings in their second game of the day, this time against #3 Quincy University, but would lose in 10 innings to conclude their season.
Game 1 (Jewell 8, Drury 7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drury got off to a 4-0 through four innings until in the fifth Jake Wilcox hit a sac-fly to right, scoring Jonah Sanford.
- Cardinal bats came alive in the sixth beginning with another sac-fly, this time from Cole Conner to make it 4-2. After an RBI single from Sanford, Alex Epp doubled to left center to give Jewell the 5-4 lead. Wilcox tacked on a single before the inning ended to leave the frame up 6-4.
- After the Panthers scored one in the seventh, Wilcox would hit a triple that would score Epp, as Jewell would hang on for the 8-7 win and continue their postseason run.
KEY STATS
- Breven Yarbro went 6.1 innings in his start, giving up five runs on seven hits and striking out four.
- Brogan McDougall recorded his fifth save of the year coming in relief of Yarbro. The fifth year would strike out two and allow two runs on three hits.
- Jake Wilcox went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs.
Game 2 (Jewell 5, Quincy 7; 10 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell struck first with a fielders choice from Evans Jilbert that scored Caleb Blasi to make it 1-0 in the top of the third.
- After a Hawk home run, an RBI triple from Jonah Sanford in the fourth tied it at two runs apiece.
- Down one in the eighth Jewell would again tie it up at 3-3, this time courtesy of a Will Brant single to right center.
- Brogan McDougall would work himself out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the bottom of the ninth to force extras.
- In the 10th, Will Brant would single to left scoring one. Later in the inning a fly out from Cole Conner would lead to a throwing error to plate one more for Jewell, making it 5-3.
- A grand slams in the bottom of the frame would give Quincy the walk-off victory, 7-5.
KEY STATS
- Chandler Ashby went seven innings in the start, striking out five and allowing three runs off eight hits.
- Jewell would collect 10 hits in all, with seven coming from Brant, Jake Wilcox, and Dawson Tweet.
