McCullough Runs for 402 Yards, Five Touchdowns as Cardinals Down Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. - The William Jewell football team downed Fort Lewis College 35-20 to win their season opener for the second year in a row. Redshirt senior Keaundre McCullough put together a game to remember, totaling 402 rushing yards and scoring all five touchdowns.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After forcing a punt on the opening drive by Fort Lewis, McCullough broke away for 67 yards on the first play from scrimmage. Three plays later, the senior ran four yards into the end zone for the first touchdown of the season.
  • Fort Lewis got a field goal to get on the board, before McCullough extended the lead after taking the first play of the drive for 75 to the end zone.
  • Adam Callahan grabbed his first career interception on the ensuing drive and returned it 20 yards to set up a three-yard score, again by McCullough to make it 21-3 in favor of the Cardinals after one quarter.
  • Midway through the second period a lightning delay pushed things back about an hour after which the Skyhawks scored to make it 21-10.
  • McCullough started the second half, much like the first with a run of 43 yards to the house to extend the Jewell lead to 28-10.
  • Fort Lewis made things interesting late in the fourth quarter. With the Cardinals leading 28-20, the Skyhawks marched down field to the seven yard line but fell one yard short of the end zone and Jewell recovered the ball on downs.
  • From his own four yard line, McCullough added the final nail with a 93-yard touchdown run to make it 35-20.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • McCullough finished with 402 net rushing yards on just 25 carries, for an average of 16.1 per rush. The redshirt senior scored all five of Jewell's touchdowns, and set NCAA era single game records in the process.
  • In his first career start, Cameron Vanzant was 8-for-15 for 75 yards and one interception.
  • Jalen Bethany caught four passes for a team high 52 yards.
  • Caleb Donnell led the defense with six tackles with Justin Endicott, Collin Williams, and Derrick Von Hubbard each had one sack while Callahan had an interception.
  • Josh Click was 5-for-5 on PAT attempts.
