LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's soccer team recorded a late-game tie against the University of Illinois Springfield to open GLVC play, 1-1. It will be the Cardinals second tie of the year, leaving them at 2-0-2 and 0-0-1 in the GLVC on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams spent the first half getting a feel for each other, combining for only five shots through the first 45 minutes.
- Action began in the second half, with a shot from Henry Staebell that was barley stopped by a diving Prairie Star keeper. Jewell would add four shots on goal in the next 15 minutes, but all would be stopped.
- In the 82' minute Alex Tomasella would score his first career goal, a low shot through a crowd of players, to give Jewell the energizing 1-0 lead.
- Back-to-back quick shots deep in the box for Illinois Springfield would lead to one goal in the 85', tying the game and leaving both teams without enough time to score another goal, ending with a 1-1 tie.
KEY STATS
- Umberto DiCarlo would have three saves, while Illinois Springfield would rack up 10 saves on Jewell's 15 shots.
- Staebell and Caua Nascimento would each have two shots on goal, leading the team, while seven of the 11 starters for Jewell would record a shot in the game.
