ALVA, Okla. - The William Jewell volleyball team saw their win streak come to an end but got right back up as they split Saturday's doubleheader. The Cardinals fell to Northwestern Oklahoma State before defeating Tabor College, by identical 3-0 scores. Jewell stands at 4-7 heading into conference play.
GAME ONE: Northwestern Oklahoma St. 3, Jewell 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northwestern Oklahoma State jumped out to an early 13-5 lead and never looked back, taking the opening set 25-15.
- The Cardinals took the lead midway through set two, 14-11 after a solo block from Bella LaPorta. The Rangers followed up with a 10-3 run to go in front. Jewell got kills from LaPorta and Emma Lea Benney to pull within three but NWOSU won the final two points, 25-20.
- Set three was all Rangers, as the hosts broke out to a 12-2 lead and cruised to a 25-9 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell was held to an attack percentage of .010 and was led by LaPorta's nine kills, 13 digs and two blocks.
- Alexis Nunn added 13 digs while Lauren Harrell had 11 assists.
GAME TWO: Jewell 3, Tabor College 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Back-to-back service aces from Samantha Thompson gave Jewell the earl lead in the opener of the weekend finale. Tabor went in front 21-18 late but the Cardinals used a 7-2 run to rally and win 25-23.
- Trailing 13-12 midway through the set, Jewell used a 13-6 run, led by two kills from LaPorta, to come back and win 25-19.
- The two teams went back-and-forth in set three until a quick 7-2 run by the Cardinals gave them the lead for good, winning 25-18.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- LaPorta and Katy Garrison finished with a team high 11 kills with the former adding 12 digs.
- Thompson led the squad with five aces while McKinzie Thompson added three.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals return home next week as they host McKendree and nationally ranked Missouri-St. Louis to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
