LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team put up 26 points in the fourth quarter on Thursday night but fell by nine to the Great Lakes Valley Conference's top team, Lewis University, 74-65. The Cardinals fall to 3-10 on the season and 1-6 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell fell into an early hole, going 0-for-6 on their opening field goal attempts, as the Flyers built a nine point lead midway through the first quarter. Ayden Shannon hit a three to get the offense going but Lewis' Jenna Badali hit one of her own at the buzzer to close the period with the Flyers on top 22-11.
- The teams traded points for much of the second quarter but Lewis pushed their advantage to 15 late in the half on a steal and bucket. Paris Opelt nailed a three while Shannon scored the final three points to send the Cardinals to the break, down 39-28.
- Ella Bockenstedt's triple early in the third frame, closed the gap to 10 but the Flyers outscored Jewell 16-8 over the rest of the quarter to open up an 18-point lead heading in to the finale.
- The Cardinals outscored Lewis 26-17 in the fourth quarter as Karlee Holland scored eight points in the period to cut the deficit to single digits but Jewell ran out of time, falling 74-65.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Shannon led all scorers with 22 points while Holland added a season high 13 off the bench.
- Opelt grabbed a team high five rebounds while scoring eight points.
- The Cardinals shot 37.5% from the floor and were 20-of-28 from the free throw line.
