Box Score FAYETTE, Iowa - The William Jewell women's basketball team scored a season high and put four players in dobule figures on their way to defeating Upper Iowa 86-78 on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 5-12 overall and 3-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell came out hot, shooting 58% in the opening quarter by getting to the basket early. Trailing 9-8 midway through the period Ayden Shannon and Paris Opelt combined for the next 13 Cardinal points before Bree Shannon got a layup to close the quarter with Jewell on top 23-14.
- The Cardinals pushed their advantage to 12 after a Kate Hillyer three to open the second frame before the Peacocks began to chip away. Trailing by 10, Upper Iowa went on a 8-3 run to pull within four but Ella Bockensted scored the final four points of the half to give the Cardinals a 45-37 advantage at the break.
- The Peacocks came out of the locker room and quickly eliminated the Jewell lead as the Cardinals went scoreless for the first six minutes as Karlee Holland put Jewell back in front, 50-48.
- An offensive rebound led to another Kate Hillyer three to make it a six point Cardinal lead and keep Jewell on top for good. The visitors continued to pour it on, growing the lead to as many as a dozen in the final moments.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Ayden Shannon led four in double figures with a season high 29 points while Hillyer added 14, Bree Shannon 13, and Caitlin Behling 12.
- Bockenstedt grabbed a team high nine rebounds while Ayden Shannon finished with four steals.
- Jewell shot a season best 47% from three while going 23-for-26 from the free throw line.

The Cardinals have a bye on next Thursday and will return home on Saturday, hosting Truman State at 1 p.m.
