LIBERTY, Mo. - The 2025 homecoming game started with a sunny afternoon but ended in a lightning shortened contest as the William Jewell football team fell 35-7 to Northeastern State on Saturday. The game was called as complete midway through the third quarter, upon mutual agreement of both head coaches, administrations, game officials. and the Great Lakes Valley Conference office. The Cardinals drop to 2-5 on the season with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both offenses started fast as Northeastern State scored on a 57-yard touchdown pass on their opening drive.
Tyler Kubat connected with
Beau Doughty for a three-yard scoring reception to cap off a 12 play drive that took over fives minutes to tie the game late in the first quarter.
The Riverhawks retook the lead quickly with another touchdown pass to from quarterback Donnie Smith but the Jewell offense stalled after two interceptions, including one for a 45 yard return to open up a 28-7 advantage at the half.
NSU added another passing score early in the third quarter before the weather set in.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kubat passed for 136 yards on 13 completions, while Xavier Winston led the Cardinals with 69 yards on four catches.
- Neither team was overly successful on the ground as Ronnie Thomas, Jr. led Jewell with 41 but the team had just 36 net while NSU finished with 79 rushing yards.
- Eric Ohmer paced the defense with eight tackles while Parker Cummins had a sack and two tackles for loss.
