LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team suffered a 74-63 setback to Wayne State College in their season opener on Tuesday evening. The Cardinals held the halftime lead but WSC went 5-for-6 from long range in the third quarter to pull out the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell got off to a slow start going nearly five minutes without scoring and committing seven turnovers in that span before Jariah Harris' three pointer sparked the offense.
- Jewell followed with a 14-1 run, capped by a bucket from Alex McGarrah to go in front 19-13 midway through the second quarter. The Wildcats cut the lead to two late in the period but another Harris triple made it 30-26, in favor of the home team, at the break.
- Wayne State came out of the locker room hot, going 5-for-6 from downtown and shooting 12-for-18 overall in the third quarter to go back in front 58-47.
- In the fourth period, the Wildcats expanded their advantage to as many as 19 but Jewell got a late rally, outscoring WSC 10-2 over the final two minutes but could get no closer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Harris finished with a game high 24 points, going 11-for-11 from the free throw line.
- Syderah Farmer added 13 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks while McGarrah handed our a team high four assists.
- Jewell shot nearly 41% from the floor and were 16-of-21 from the charity stripe.

Jewell hits the road for the first time this weekend as they travel to Wichita, Kansas for the Newman Classic. The Cardinals will take on the hosts on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. followed by No. 3 ranked Fort Hays State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
