KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The William Jewell football team fell 35-17 on Saturday at Truman State University, after spotting the Bulldogs a 25-point first half lead. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 2-8 on the season and 0-7 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After punts from each team on their opening possessions, the Bulldogs took the early lead with a two-yard touchdown run by quarterback Dylan Hair. Jewell got on the board with a 28-yard field goal from
Bleu Renfrow on the next drive.
Two quick plays for 55 yards put the Bulldogs back into the end zone before a Cardinal turnover set up the the Truman offense in Jewell territory again that resulted in touchdown and a 21-3 lead. The home team added another score before the Cardinals used the final 1:10 of the half to drive 74 yards ending in a
Reece Thomas touchdown catch to make it 28-10 at the break.
Truman used another Jewell turnover to add an additional touchdown and push their lead to 35-10. The Cardinals started the fourth quarter with a 10-yard touchdown pass from
Jake Shaffer to
Nate Barnett to cut the deficit in half but both defenses locked down and allowed no more.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals were 30-of-45 through the air, led by Tyler Kubat's 24 completions for 174 yards.
- Xavier Winston finished with a team high 54 yards while Reece Thomas caught his third touchdown in the last two games and Barnett tied his career best with his sixth scoring catch of the season.
- Jonny Williams had a team high eight tackles while Farand Washington, Eric Ohmer, and Kyler Craigg each had six.
- Jewell had one of their most disciplined performances of the season, allowing just 35 yards on three penalties, while drawing more than 100 penalty yards from the Bulldogs.
