Cardinals Hit a Dozen Threes at Missouri S&T

ROLLA, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team got off to a hot start, hitting eight first half three pointers but went cold in the third quarter as Missouri S&T rallied to win 71-64. The Cardinals drop to 5-16 overall and 3-12 in conference play.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ella Bockenstedt and Kirsten Hauck combined for the first 14 Cardinal points, while hitting four three pointers as Jewell opened up a seven point lead. The Miners got back-to-back layups to cut the lead down to two 16-14, at the end of the first period. 
  • Missouri S&T quickly tied things up at 16-all to start the second but Kate Hillyer's three sparked a 10-1 Cardinal run. The Miners again cut the lead down to a single possession but Ayden Shannon scored the final five points of the half to send the teams to the locker room with Jewell on top 34-29.
  • Paris Opelt scored nine points in the opening minutes of the third quarter but Jewell trailed by five heading into the final frame.
  • Hillyer scored the first five points of the fourth quarter tie things up at 50 but Missouri S&T followed with a 14-0 run to go on top 64-50 with just over three minutes to play. A three from Opelt cut the deficit down to five with 19 seconds remaining but Jewell could get no closer.    

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Opelt led three players in double figures with a career high 19 points while Kirsten Hauck added 15 and Hillyer, 14. 
  • Jewell shot 38% from three, hitting 12 in total but was just 1-for-9 in the critical third quarter. 
  • The Cardinals scored 13 points off 10 Miner turnovers.
