FORT SMITH, Ark. – The William Jewell baseball team opened up their 2025 season Friday afternoon against the University of Arkansas Fort Smith with a doubleheader against the Lions. Jewell scored three runs in each game resulting in a 3-2 game one win and 3-4 game two loss. The Cardinals quickly sit at 1-1 on the early season.
Game 1 (Jewell 3, Arkansas Ft. Smith 2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell wasted no time to begin the season scoring as in the first inning after a pair of Cardinal hits, Will McCombs singled into left center to score Cale Blasi from third to go up 1-0 early.
- After two Lion runs, Jewell battled back in the 6th inning when a second McCombs single to left would score a runner. This time it was Jordan Phillips who crossed home to tie the game at two runs apiece.
- Originally set to go seven innings due to the doubleheader, in the extra 8th inning Ben Click hit a sac fly to center that scored Phillips to go up 3-2.
- A one-two-three inning in the bottom half of the frame gave Jewell their season-opening victory.
KEY STATS
- Chandler Ashby got the start on the bump for Jewell, tossing 4.0 innings and striking out six.
- Nick Fitzanko received the win, putting up four K's in his appearance.
- Both McCombs and Phillips had two hits, with the former having two RBIs.
Game 2 (Jewell 3, Arkansas Ft. Smith 4 )
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded base hits through the first three innings, when in the 4th a Justin George double plated a pair to go up 2-0. One batter later a single up the middle from Jonah Sanford gave Jewell a three-run lead.
- Arkansas Ft. Smith answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to deadlock the game at 3-3.
- The Cardinals would collect three hits in the next three innings but would not be enough after the Lions when up 4-3.
KEY STATS
- Sophomore Charlie Rambo got the loss in his first start of the year, allowing seven hits, four runs, and issuing three walks in his 4.1 IP.
- Will McCombs had three hits to up his two-game total to five.
- After stealing a career-high three bases in the first game, AJ Rios tacked on another two steals in the nightcap.
