SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The William Jewell women's basketball team went on the road on Thursday and picked up a 73-57 victory of Illinois Springfield to move to 7-18 on the season, and 5-14 in league play. After defeating also the Stars back on December 2, the Cardinals complete the season sweep of their GLVC foe.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded buckets in the first quarter with neither leading by more than five. On top by one, the Cardinals got a three from Ayden Shannon to close the opening period with an 18-14 advantage.
- A Kirsten Hauck layup midway through the second frame pushed the Cardinal lead to eight but UIS followed with a quick 8-0 run to knot things up. Kate Hillyer's free throws made it 32-30, in favor of Jewell, at the break.
- The Cardinal offense came to life in the third period, outscoring the Stars 23-16 while shooting 60%. Leading by two late in the quarter, Jewell went on a 12-3 run, capped by a Hauck bucket to make it a double-digit lead, 55-44.
- UIS cut the lead down to seven early in the fourth but the Cardinals closed the game on an 18-9 run to expand their lead to a game high 21 late in the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell were efficient all night, shooting 47% from the floor, 12-of-24 from long range, and 11-of-13 from the free throw line.
- Shannon scored a game high 26 points on 6-of-9 from three while Hauck had 18.
- Paris Opelt picked up the double-double, her second of the season, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
- The Cardinals forced 17 turnovers that led to 24 points.
