Cardinals Win Pair of One Run Games to Extend Win Streak to Seven

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team extended their win streak to seven straight on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Wayne State College (Neb.). The Cardinals defeated the Wildcats 2-1 and 1-0 to even their record at 8-8.

GAME ONE: Jewell 2, Wayne State 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wildcats scored first in the opener as Jessica Klein sent an RBI triple to right center to drive in the first run of the day.
  • After four-plus scoreless innings, Jewell put two runners on with two ours in the fifth inning for Amanda Chung who sent a ball off the left field fence to put the Cardinals on top, 2-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals out hit Wayne State 6-2, led by three singles from Mikayla Chairez
  • Chung added two hits, including a double, with two RBI.
  • Sydney Parra (4-2) earned the complete game win, giving up just the single earned run with three strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Jewell 1, Wayne State 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams put singular runners on base in the early innings but came up empty. In the top half of the sixth, the Wildcats had two on with only one out but Avrey Reynolds got the strikeout and a pop up to keep WSC off the board.
  • In the bottom half, Emma Jane Ogle sent her conference-leading eighth home run of the season over the right center field fence to give Jewell the only run they needed.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals were limited to three hits in game two, one each from Ogle, Chung, and Addie Bell
  • Avrey Reynolds (4-3) tossed the complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out four.
