LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team upped their win streak to nine games on Sunday, completing a four-game sweep of Wayne State College (Neb.). The Cardinals, who improve to 10-8 on on the season, won 4-0 in game one before rallying late for a 3-2 victory in game two.
GAME ONE: Jewell 4, Wayne State 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite not having a hit yet in the game, the Cardinals plated two runs in the fourth inning. After two free passes, Jewell had two in scoring position with only one out. A strikeout on a wild pitch allowed the first run to score before another wild pitch, this time on a walk to Sydney Cure, pushed the second run across.
- With one out in the sixth, Mikayla Chairez doubled to left followed by a walk to Emma Jane Ogle. Both runners scored on an Amanda Chung double to left center to make it 4-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell had just four hits in game one, led by two from Chung.
- Sydney Parra (5-2) earned her fifth win with a complete game shutout.
GAME TWO: Jewell 3, Wayne State 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wayne State scored first in game two with two runs on four hits, including a solo home run.
- Ogle led off the fourth with a four pitch walk and came around to score on a double to right center off the bat of Chung to cut the deficit in half.
- Jewell got back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the sixth and a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position. Chung sent a RBI ground out to second base to tie the game before Ogle beat a throw to the plate on a fielder's choice from Addie Bell to take the lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Chung's double was the lone Cardinal hit of the game while Ogle scored twice.
- Avrey Reynolds (5-3) earned the win in relief, with 4.2 innings of scoreless work.
