Jewell Takes Pair from Davenport to Win Series

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team took two games from Davenport University on Thursday afternoon to win the series. The Cardinals, who won 5-1 and 9-0, improve to 15-11 on the season. 

GAME ONE: Jewell 5, Davenport 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An error allowed Davenport to grab an early lead but Mikayla Chairez homered in the third inning to tie things up at one. 
  • With two outs in the fifth, Emma Jane Ogle reached base and scored on a RBI single from Amanda Chung. An Alexa Almejo double and two errors, allowed two more to cross the plate and push the Cardinals in front 4-1.
  • With two in scoring position, Reagan Bennett grounded out to shortstop, scoring Abby Harder to make it 5-1, Cardinals. 
     
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Chung and Almejo led the team with two hits a piece while Ella Hoffman had a pinch hit double. 
  • Sydney Parra (7-2) earned a career high seventh win with the complete game effort, striking out three. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 9, Davenport 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals jumped on top in the bottom of the second with a two RBI base knock from Mikayla Chairez before Hoffman singled up the middle in the following frame to plate two more.
  • In the fourth, Tori Woodard and Addie Bell drove in three runs on back-to-back hits and make it a 7-0 Jewell advantage. 
  • With two outs in the sixth, Woodard blasted a two-run home to left center field to walk off in run-rule fashion.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell pounded out 12 hits, led by three from Woodard who scored three times and drove in three. 
  • Bell added two hits and two RBI while Hoffman and Chairez also drove in two. 
  • Katie Heckman (1-0) earned her first win of the season with a complete game shutout, striking out four. 

UP NEXT
Jewell returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference action this weekend as they host Lewis and UIndy on Saturday and Sunday.
