Cardinals Drop Two to Lewis in GLVC Action

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday to Lewis University, 9-0 and 2-0. The Cardinals drop to 15-13 overall and 2-4 in conference play. 

GAME ONE: Lewis 9, Jewell 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lewis jumped on top in the third inning with a grand slam before adding another in the fourth. 
  • In the fifth, a hit-by-pitch and bunt single put two on for the Flyers who got back-to-back base hits to push their lead to seven. With the bases loaded, the Cardinals got two outs at the plate before a single up the middle plated two more for the visitors. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Alexa Almejo had the lone Jewell hit with a single in the fifth inning. 
  • Katie Heckman (1-1) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits. 

GAME TWO: Lewis 2, Jewell 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lewis led off the game with a triple to right field and scored on a base hit to left to take the the early lead. 
  • The Flyers tacked on another run in the third on a sac fly. 
  • Jewell had their best opportunity in the bottom of the fourth as Mikayla Chairez led off with a double followed by a walk to Almejo to put two on base but the Cardinals came up empty. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Chairez and Tori Woodard accounted for the two Cardinal hits. 
  • Sydney Parra (7-3) took the hard luck loss, allowing just a single earned runs on six hits while striking out four. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals look to rebound on Sunday as they host Indianapolis at 12 p.m.
