Cardinals Knock Off No. 20 McKendree in 11 Innings to Split with Bearcats

LEBANON, Ill. - The William Jewell softball team saw their win streak end on Saturday with a 5-0 loss but came back to defeat No. 20 ranked McKendree 7-4 in 11 innings in game two. The Cardinals move to 11-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the split. 

GAME ONE: #20 McKendree 5, Jewell 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bearcats got on the board first with an RBI double in the first inning and added two more in the fourth. 
  • Jewell had a scoring chance in the fifth frame as Tori Woodard led off with a double and advanced to third but was stranded. 
  • McKendree got two more runs in the bottom half to bring the score to the final.   

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals had just four hits in game one, led by two from Amanda Chung
  • Avrey Reynolds (5-4) took the loss, allowing five earned runs over five innings. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 7, #20 McKendree 4 (11 Innings)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell took the early lead in the night cap as Woodard reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Emma Jane Ogle to score before Chung crossed the plate on an RBI single. 
  • Chung put a sac fly into right field to score Mikayla Chairez in the fifth before Addie Bell scored on an error in the following frame to make it 4-0 in favor of the Cardinals.  
  • McKendree rallied in the sixth with four runs on four hits to force extra innings. 
  • In the 11th, Reagan Bennett led off with a solo home run to right center to put the Cardinals on top before a walk and an error put runners in scoring position for Woodard who doubled to score two more. 
  • McKendree put one on in the bottom half but the defense came through with a fly out to end the game.   

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell put up 13 hits in game two, led by Chairez's three.
  • Woodard finished with two hits and drove in three while Chairez and Chung each scored twice.
  • Reynolds (6-4) earned the win in relief, tossing six scoreless innings with two strikeouts.  

UP NEXT
The Cardinals continue the GLVC opening weekend on Sunday with a doubleheader at Maryville.
