Cardinals Take Advantage of Free Passes in Sweep of Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. - The William Jewell softball team pounded out 18 hits and received 19 free passes on Saturday on their way to a doubleheader sweep of Quincy University. The Cardinals improve to 18-14 overall and 5-5 in conference play after taking game one 9-0 in five innings and winning game two, 12-4. 

GAME ONE: Jewell 9, Quincy 0 (5 Inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell started fast, putting up a four spot in the opening inning. With the bases loaded, Alexa Almejo put a ball off the center field wall to plate two runs before Addie Bell singled to add another. Ella Hoffman stole second as Bell crossed the plate on a the throw to make it 4-0 early. 
  • Tori Woodard made it a seven run advantage in the top of the second with a three-run blast to left center. 
  • The Cardinals added single runs in the third and fifth to make it a 9-0 game.     

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell got two hits and two RBI from Almejo while Woodard drove in three. 
  • Mikayla Chairez and Emma Jane Ogle each scored twice. 
  • The Cardinals were the recipients of seven walks, a hit batter, and two Quincy errors. 
  • Sydney Parra (9-3) earned her third complete game shutout of the season, on just 46 pitches, allowing just two hits. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 12, Quincy 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chairez put the Cardinals on top early with a lead off solo home run to start game two. Hoffman and Kelch added RBI in the second inning to give Jewell an early 3-0 lead. 
  • Quincy got on the board for the first time with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second but the Cards came back with two of their in the next frame to maintain a three-run advantage.
  • The Hawks again pulled within one but Addie Bell's bases loaded double in the fourth cleared the bags and made it 8-4, Cardinals.    
  • Jewell got an additional run in the fifth followed by an RBI triple from Sydney Cure in the sixth. Ogle led off the final inning with a solo shot to bring the score to the final of 12-4. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals tied a season high with 12 runs as Chairez, Ogle, Bell, and Kelch all had two hits with the former two scoring three times. 
  • Jewell again received numerous free bases, drawing nine walks, one hit-by-pitch, and an error. 
  • Olivia Wood earned the win in relief, tossing 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.  

UP NEXT
Jewell heads to Upper Iowa for a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
