Upper Iowa Uses Late Inning Rally to Take Two from Cardinals

FAYETTE, Iowa - The William Jewell softball team battled the elements and Upper Iowa University on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals took the lead in each game but the Peacocks rallied to win 14-12 and 7-5. Jewell drops to 18-16 overall and 5-7 in conference play. 

GAME ONE: Upper Iowa 14, Jewell 12
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell started strong, scoring seven runs over the first two innings on five hits and one Peacock error. 
  • With the Cardinals leading 7-4 in the bottom of the third, Upper Iowa got a one out grand slam to take their first lead of the day, 8-7. Another three-run home run in the fifth expanded the UIU lead to four. 
  • In the sixth, the Cardinals got three runs back on an RBI double from Tori Woodard who then scored on a pinch hit two-run home run off the bat of Reagan Bennett
  • Trailing by two and down to their last out, Woodard reached on an error allowing Abby Harder to score before Addie Bell drove in the tying run with an single. 
  • In the bottom half of the seventh, Upper Iowa got a walk off two run home run from Serah Shafer to win 14-12. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals had a season high 15 hits, led by Woodard who went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. 
  • Alexa Almejo gathered three hits, drove in three and scored twice while Bell and Mikayla Chairez also had two hits. 
  • Avrey Reynolds (6-8) took the loss, working four innings in relief, allowing 10 earned runs. 

GAME TWO: Upper Iowa 7, Jewell 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Upper Iowa took the early lead in game two with two runs in the first frame before adding another in the third. 
  • The Cardinals scored five runs on just two hits in the top of the fourth, with three of those runs coming via free passes. After taking the lead, Amanda Chung singled up the middle to score Emma Jane Ogle and make it 5-3, in favor of Jewell. 
  • Upper Iowa used another late inning rally to score three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to win 7-5. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Jewell bats were chilled in game two, finishing with  four hits, led by Chung's two while leaving 11 runners on base.
  • Sydney Parra (9-4) allowed six earned runs to suffer the loss in the circle. 

UP NEXT
Jewell returns home next weekend to host Truman State on Sunday afternoon.
