Softball Picks Up Senior Day Split with UMSL

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team dropped game one 7-5 but came back to shutout Missouri-St. Louis in game two, 6-0. The Cardinals improve to 23-25 overall and 10-16 in conference play. 

GAME ONE: UMSL 7, Jewell 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tritons started hot, plating five runs on four hits in the opening inning to take the early lead. 
  • In the third, Amanda Chung singled to get the Cardinals on the board before Alexa Almejo's three-run home run pulled Jewell within one. 
  • The Cardinals tied things up in the sixth frame as Chung singled to score Mikayla Chairez
  • UMSL scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to take game one, 7-5. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals roped 12 hits, led by three from Chairez and two each by Chung and Tori Woodard
  • After a rocky start Sydney Parra (11-7) settled to to pick up the complete game, but took the loss in extras. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 6, UMSL 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In game two, it was the Cardinals who took the first inning lead as Emma Jane Ogle scored on a sac fly by Woodard. 
  • Jewell added four runs in the third, highlighted by a Woodard two-run home run, before plating an additional score in the sixth.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Chairez and Abby Harder led the team with two hits while Woodard drove in three. 
  • Avrey Reynolds (7-11) was superb in the circle, tossing a one hit shutout with five strikeouts. 

UP NEXT
Jewell will close out the season on Sunday at home as they host Lincoln University of Missouri.
