Cardinals Win Pair of One Run Games Over Southwest Baptist

LIBERTY, Mo. - Olivia Wood picked up both wins in the circle on Monday as the William Jewell softball team swept a pair of one run games over Southwest Baptist. The Cardinals won game one 9-8 before a 2-1 victory in game two to move to 22-18 overall and 9-9 in conference play. 

GAME ONE: Jewell 9, Southwest Baptist 8
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell had three hits and were the recipients of five free passes to plate five runs in the opening frame and take the early lead. 
  • Emma Jane Ogle led off the second inning with solo blast inside the left field pole before a sac fly by Lexi Lopez made it 7-0, Cardinals. 
  • Southwest Baptist got on the board in the fourth after a Cardinal fielding error but Jewell got the run back in the bottom half as Amanda Chung scored on a wild pitch. 
  • The Bearcats rallied in the late innings, scoring two in the fifth, four in the sixth, and another in the seventh to tie things up at eight.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Ogle walked and came around to score on a base hit off the bat of Alexa Almejo to win 9-8. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell finished with nine hits, led by a two each from Chung, Mikayla Chairez, and Tori Woodard. 
  • The Cardinals were the recipients of nine walks and two hit batters from SBU pitching. 
  • Olivia Wood (3-3) earned the win in relief, tossing two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout. 

GAME TWO: Jewell 2, Southwest Baptist 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals again took the early lead in game two, using three hits to score Ogle in the opening inning. 
  • An Alemjo double to left scored Chung, who had singled, to put the Cardinals in front 2-0 in the fifth. 
  • Southwest Baptist made things interesting down the stretch, scoring a run in the seventh before a fly out ended the game. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell put up nine hits, led by Woodard's three while Chung added two. 
  • Wood (4-3) tossed the complete game effort, striking out four, allowing just a single earned run.
