LIBERTY, Mo. – In his final at-bat of his Cardinal career, William Jewell redshirt senior
Jonah Sanford walked-off the season for the Cardinals in the bottom of the ninth inning over Rockhurst University, 5-4.
Down 4-1 headed into the bottom of the sixth inning, Jewell plated four runs in the final four innings to secure the win in the final game of the regular season and knocked the Hawks out of the postseason tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rockhurst got up 2-0 early on. In the third Cale Blasi hit a blooper back to the pitcher allowing Luke Bies to score the first Jewell run.
- Rockhurst quickly loaded in the bases in the sixth and capitalized with two runs to extend their lead to 4-1. Ryan Hunt came in and got the last two outs to keep Jewell down only three runs.
- In the bottom of the inning, after reaching on a fielder's choice, Blasi would score courtesy of an RBI double from Jordan Phillips to cut the Hawk lead to two runs.
- Cardinals made quick work of Rockhurst in the seventh and plated one of their own in the bottom of the inning when Bies ripped his second double of the day to score Will McCombs from second.
- In the bottom of the ninth after Ben Click reached being hit by a pitch, Bies sent a double to right field that rolled past the Rockhurst right fielder allowing the Jewell shortstop to get to third and scoring pinch runner Luke Linder to tie the game.
- On the first pitch of his at-bat, Sanford delivered a sharply-hit ground ball to second base. The throw home was not in time as Bies came in to score and Sanford cleared the Cardinal dugout to end the year with a 5-4 win.
