Jewell Takes Two On Opening Day of Crossover

HAMMOND, Ind. - The William Jewell volleyball team started the annual Midwest Region Crossover with two wins on Friday, defeating Malone University in straight sets before battling out a 3-1 victory over Roosevelt University. The Cardinals improve to 5-15 overall, surpassing last season's win total.

Jewell 3, Malone 0
In the opener, Jewell put together one of their best offensive performances, hitting .330, their highest mark since September 2024 when they hit .396, also against Malone. The Cardinals broke out to a 20-12 lead after two aces from Brianna Witthar and never looked back, taking the first set of the morning 25-17.

Tied 9-9 early in set two, Jewell went on a 10-6 run behind two kills and a block from Kali Adamec to open up a 19-15 advantage. Macy Bartlett and Silvia Fisher added three kills before another Witthar ace made it 23-17 late as the Cardinals cruised to the two set lead. A 9-1 run in the latter half of the third frame put Jewell on top 24-14, but Malone rattled off five straight to get back within striking distance before Kelsey Keling's kill gave the Cards the sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Wylie Singleton led the offense with 11 kills while Bartlett added 10.
  • Alexis Frazier finished with a team high 33 assists, nine digs, and four blocks, with Witthar chipping in three aces.

Jewell 3, Roosevelt 1
Leading by one early, the Cardinals used an 8-1 run to double up Roosevelt in the nightcap, 16-8. The Lakers rallied pulling with one before five straight points from Jewell put the on top 22-16. Bartlett finished things off with a kill and ace to take set one, 25-20.

Set two was back-and-forth as neither team could muster more than three point lead. Tied at 23-all, Roosevelt committed back-to-back errors to give Jewell the set 25-23. After the Lakers rallied to take set three, the Cardinals looked to put things away in the fourth, leading 19-15 late. Roosevelt had other plans, however, putting together an 8-3 run to go in front 23-22. The teams traded two points at a time before the Cardinals were able to string three together behind blocks from Singleton, Frazier, and Adamec before the former's service ace closed the day, 29-27.
